Troy quarterback Goose Crowder out for remainder of season
Troy quarterback Goose Crowder is out for the remainder of the season on the advice of team medical personnel, it was announced Tuesday.
Crowder began the season as the Trojans’ starter, but was knocked out of two games — Memphis on Sept. 7 and Louisiana-Monroe on Sept. 28 — with what was termed an “upper body injury.” In four games this season, the junior from Gardendale completed 43 of 62 passes for 574 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions.
“Goose is one of the toughest football players that I’ve had the privilege of coaching,” Troy coach Gerad Parker said. “This is never the outcome that you want, but at the end of the day, what is best for the long-term health of our student-athletes will always outweigh any other alternative. Goose has handled this with the class and maturity that you would expect from a man of his character.”
Sophomore Tucker Kilcrease and junior Matthew Caldwell have split time at quarterback in Crowder’s absence. Kilcrease started the Trojans’ most-recent game — a 25-9 loss to South Alabama last Tuesday — though Caldwell played the final series of the first half and the entire second half.
Troy is 1-6 overall and 0-3 in Sun Belt Conference play heading into Saturday’s game at Arkansas State. Parker said Monday he has not decided upon a starter moving forward.
“We’re going to continue to evaluate that this week to see who practices best and puts us in the best chance to go up to Jonesboro and play well,” he said. “I believe both can play efficient and play good football for us. We’ve just got to continue to find ways to do what they do best and give them those opportunities. But both will be involved in playing this week.”
Kickoff for Troy-Arkansas State is set for 6 p.m. at Centennial Bank Stadium in Jonesboro. The game will stream live via ESPN+.
