Troy QB Gunnar Watson honored by Sun Belt Conference

Troy quarterback Gunnar Watson on Monday was named Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Watson, a senior from Butler, Ga., passed for a career-high 392 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-13 win at Texas State on Saturday. He also ran for a 6-yard score as the Trojans won their fifth straight game and took over first place in the Sun Belt West Division.

Watson is the second Trojan to win Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week this season, after running back Kimani Vidal did so following a Week 6 win over Arkansas State. The Trojans (6-2, 3-1 Sun Belt) host in-state rival South Alabama in the annual “Battle of the Belt” on Thursday night, with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m. on ESPNU.

Louisiana linebacker Cameron Whitfield was named Defensive Player of the Week after collecting 3.5 sacks and forcing three fumbles in a 33-14 victory over South Alabama. Georgia Southern kicker Michael Lantz, who made three field goals and five extra points in a 44-27 victory over Georgia State, took home honors on special teams.
