Troy grinds out 19-0 victory on rainy day at Army

There were miscues and raindrops galore at Michie Stadium on Saturday, but Troy emerged with a 19-0 victory over Army on Saturday.

Scott Taylor Renfroe kicked four field goals and Kimani Vidal posted his 11th career 100-yard rushing effort as the Trojans (5-2) won their fourth straight game on a rainy day in West Point, N.Y. The Troy defense limited Army (2-4) to just 253 total yards in pitching their first shutout since a 29-0 win over South Alabama in 2020.

Troy’s only offensive touchdown came with 38 seconds left in the first half, when Gunnar Watson hit Chris Lewis for a 52-yard pass down the left sideline. Otherwise, all the Trojans’ points came off the right foot of Renfroe, who connected on field goals of 23, 35 and 32 yards in the first half and 43 yards in the second.

Troy dominated statistically in the first half, but several breakdowns in the red zone led to only a 16-0 halftime lead. The Trojans fumbled the ball away at the 2 after long pass from Watson to Jabre Barber, went just 2-for-6 on third down and committed a number of pre-snap penalties.

Troy got Renfroe’s final field goal on its opening series of the second half to go up 19-0, but didn’t do much offensively after that. The Trojans were just 4 of 13 on third down in the game and committed nine penalties for 80 yards.

Vidal — the nation’s leading rusher coming into Saturday — ran for 116 yards on 23 carries, giving him 951 yards for the season and 3,260 for his career. He is now 181 yards behind DeWhitt Betterson Sr.’s school record of 3,441 yards, set from 2001-04.

Damien Taylor added 82 yards on 10 carries, part of a 222-yard rushing day for the Trojans. Watson completed 10 of 21 passes for 227 yards, 138 of that on four completions to Barber.

Troy’s defense allowed 175 rushing yards, but limited Army to just 3.7 yards per play. The Knights came in 13-for-14 on fourth down this season, but the Trojans stopped them on four of five attempts, including once on fourth-and-1 in Troy territory.

Richard Jibunor had two of Troy’s five sacks, while linebacker Jayden McDonald had 13 tackles, 2.5 for loss. Safety Irshaad Davis had a fumble recovery in the fourth quarter and an interception on the game’s final play.

Army lost starting quarterback Bryson Daily to an ankle injury midway through the second quarter, with freshman Champ Harris completing just 6 of 13 passes for 63 yards and getting held to negative rushing yards in relief. Kanye Udoh ran for 124 yards in a losing effort for the Knights.

Army was shut out for the first time since a 35-0 loss at Stanford in 2014. The home shutout was the Knights’ first since a 28-0 blanking by South Florida in 2003.

Troy has an open date next Saturday before returning to Sun Belt Conference competition on Oct. 28 at Texas State. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos, Texas.
