Troy football coach Jon Sumrall gets new contract, report says
Troy football coach Jon Sumrall has agreed to a new contract designed to keep him at the school through 2026, according to a report Friday by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
The 40-year-old Sumrall led the Trojans to a 12-2 record and the Sun Belt Conference championship in 2022, his first season as a head coach. He was named Sun Belt Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year award.
Thamel is reporting that Sumrall’s new contract will include a raise, “increased staff salary pool and additional program investments for players.” He made $825,000 in 2022, according to USA Today’s Coaches Salary database.
Troy has not announced Sumrall’s new contract, though an announcement could come as early as next week. The Trojans did announce Friday that inside linebackers coach Tayler Polk has added the title of co-defensive coordinator.
Troy hired Greg Gasparato as defensive coordinator and safeties coach last month. Gasparato replaces Shiel Wood, who was hired to the same job at Tulane.
“TP is a vital part of our program and is a future coordinator,” Sumrall said. “He is complimenting what Greg’s vision is for our defense and helping bridge the gap between what we did last year to what we’re going to do this year.
“I have really high regard for his knowledge of the game, his relationship with his players and the energy he brings to everything he does. Tayler has had a tremendous positive impact on our program in a year and a half, and he’s earned the elevated role.”
Troy completed its second week of spring practice on Friday. The Trojans’ annual T-Day spring game is set for April 15.
