Troy finishes in Top 25 for first time as FBS program
Troy has finished the football season nationally ranked for the first time as an FBS program.
The Trojans check in at No. 19 in the final Associated Press poll, which was released late Monday. The USA Today Coaches Poll will be released on Tuesday.
Troy was one of two teams from the state of Alabama in the final AP rankings, along with No. 5 Alabama. No. 9 Tulane and No. 24 Fresno State were the other Group of 5 programs to finish in the Top 25.
Troy finished the season at 12-2, winning the Sun Belt Conference championship and beating UT-San Antonio 18-12 in the Cure Bowl. Coach Jon Sumrall’s Trojans enter the offseason on an 11-game winning streak, second longest in the country behind national champion Georgia’s 17 straight.
Troy moved up to the FBS ranks in 2001. The Trojans won three national championships in lower divisions, taking home the NAIA title in 1968 and NCAA Division II trophies in 1984 and 1987.
