Troy falls to Minnesota in Women’s NIT semifinals, 74-69

A fierce second-half comeback fell short for Troy in the semifinals of the Women’s NIT on Wednesday, as the Trojans lost 74-69 to Minnesota at Trojan Arena.

Senior forward Ja’Mia Hollings recorded her fourth straight double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds for Troy, whose season ends at 22-12. Tai’Sheka Porchia added 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Makayia Hallmon added 19.

Troy’s “Big 3″ of Hollings, Porchia and Hallmon accounted for all but four of their points in the game. The Trojans won the rebounding battle 50-46 — including 22 on the offensive glass — but made only 3 of 17 3-pointers and turned the ball over 16 times.

Amaya Battle led Minnesota (20-15) with 18 points, while Mallory Heyer added 15 and 9 with three 3-pointers. The Golden Gophers led 46-36 at halftime and by as many as 14 in the third quarter before the Trojans began to rally in front of a Trojan Arena crowd of 4,333.

Troy got to within 61-59 in the final 10 seconds of the third quarter, and trailed 68-67 after Hollings made one of two free throws with 55 seconds remaining. But Minnesota’s Grace Gocholski hit a 3-pointer with 40 seconds to play, making it a four-point game.

Troy’s Hollings then missed a 3-pointer on the other end, and the Trojans were forced to foul after that. The Gophers made three of four from the stripe in the final 23 seconds to seal the victory.

Minnesota advances to face Saint Louis in Saturday’s WNIT championship game.
