Troy defensive coordinator Shiel Wood headed to Tulane
Troy defensive coordinator Shiel Wood has been hired to the same job at Tulane, a source confirmed to AL.com.
Led by a deep and experienced defense, Troy went 12-2 and won the Sun Belt Conference title in 2022. Wood’s Trojans defense finished No. 8 in the country in both scoring defense (17.1 points per game) and takeaways (27) last season, and also ranked in the Top 20 in total defense.
Tulane has already had to replace its defensive coordinator twice this offseason. Chris Hampton left for Oregon in January and was replaced by Marshall’s Lance Guidry, but Guidry last week was hired away by Miami.
Prior to Troy, Wood was co-defensive coordinator at Army for two seasons, and has also worked at Georgia Tech, Wofford and Georgia State. News of his departure was first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Tulane, which went 12-2 and won the Cotton Bowl last season, opens the 2023 season at home Sept. 2 vs. South Alabama.
