Troy baseball rallies for 10-9 victory over App State

Kole Myers’ RBI double in the bottom of the 10th inning gave Troy a 10-9, walk-off victory over Appalachian State in the Sun Belt Conference baseball tournament Wednesday in Montgomery.

The third-seeded Trojans (39-18) advance to face the Southern Miss-James Madison winner at 4 p.m. Thursday at Riverwalk Stadium. The sixth-seeded Mountaineers (27-24) face the loser in an elimination game at 9 a.m. Thursday.

For a while Wednesday, it appeared that Troy would be the ones on the brink of heading home. The Trojans blew up a two-run lead by allowing four runs in the top of the ninth, and were down 9-7 with two outs in the bottom of the inning.

That’s when shortstop Tremayne Cobb ripped a two-run to tie the game. The homer also scored third baseman Caleb Bartolero, who had led off the inning with a single after making a critical error to start the Mountaineers’ rally in the top of the ninth.

Troy closer Noah Manning (3-2) worked around a two-out single in the top of the 10th to set up Myers’ heroics. App State’s Jackson Steensma (3-1) hit pinch-hitter Kyle Mock with a pitch, then walked Clay Stearns to put the winning run in scoring position.

Myers — Troy’s leadoff man and center fielder — then lined a 1-2 pitch up the alley in left center to score Mock and give the Trojans the victory.

App State led 5-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth before Troy scored five times. Brooks Bryan smashed a three-run homer, Bartolero delivered an RBI single and William Sullivan provided a sacrifice fly as the Trojans rallied to tie it.

Troy took a 6-5 lead on a two-out error in the sixth, then went up 7-5 on Bartolero’s solo homer in the seventh. Bartolero went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs and RBIs for the Trojans.

Troy took that 7-5 lead into the ninth, but App State put runners on the corners to start the inning on Bartolero’s error and a single off Zach Fruit. The Trojans then went to Manning, an All-Sun Belt pick with 11 saves this season.

Luke Drumheller flew out for the first out, scoring CJ Boyd to make it 7-6. Hayden Cross singled, then stole second to put runners on second and third with one out.

Troy coach Skylar Meade ordered an intentional walk to load the bases, then Manning struck out Austin St. Laurent. He couldn’t finish off the Mountaineers, however, hitting Alex Reed to force in the tying run before allowing Jonathan Xuereb’s 2-run single to make it a 9-7 game.

Manning got the third out without further damage, but Steensma responded to Bartolero’s leadoff single by retiring both Sullivan and Sun Belt Player of the Year Shane Lewis. That brought up Cobb, who blasted the first pitch he saw from Steensma over the left field wall to tie the game and force extra innings.

Myers also had a pair of hits, including a triple. Sullivan and Lewis — who leads the Sun Belt in homers, slugging percentage and total bases — combined to go 0-for-9 with four strikeouts.

App State homered three times in the early innings, with Drumheller, Reed and CJ Boyd all going deep off Troy starter Grayson Stewart. The Mountaineers outhit the Trojans 15-9, but walked seven batters and hit three others.
