Tropical depression may form soon near Caribbean

There could be a new tropical depression in the Atlantic Ocean soon, and some in the Caribbean may be facing tropical storm watches later today.

The National Hurricane Center on Wednesday continued to track an area of low pressure located about 850 miles east of the Windward Islands.

It was looking more organized and could become a tropical depression in the next day or so, forecasters said.

So far the system did not have a well-defined center, but the hurricane center said it will be in an area favorable for development. It is forecast to track to the west-northwest toward the Lesser Antilles.

The hurricane center warned those in the islands to keep an eye on the system, saying “Interests in the Lesser Antilles should monitor the progress of this system, and watches may be required for some of the islands later today.”

A system has to have sustained winds of 39 mph and a defined center of circulation to become a tropical storm and get a name. The next name on the 2023 Atlantic storm list is Tammy.

Name or no name, the storm could bring gusty winds, heavy rain and the potential for flooding to the some of the Lesser Antilles starting on Friday.

The hurricane center as of Wednesday is not watching any other potential storms in the tropical Atlantic.

The Atlantic hurricane season still has more than a month to go. The last day of the season will be Nov. 30.
