Trio charged in rash of car break-ins at Hoover apartment complex

Three people have been arrested in a spate of car break-ins at a Hoover apartment complex.

Hoover police on Thursday identified the suspects as Jayryn Omar Chaney, 18, of Bessemer; Jordan Latrell Smith, 19, of Fairfield, and Darrell DeWayne Jackson, 18, of Bessemer.

Just after midnight on March 2, officers responded to a report of the suspects breaking into vehicles in the parking lot of The Halston Apartments on Autumn Wood Drive.

As police entered the complex, the suspect vehicle was fleeing the scene and collided with another motorist in the intersection of Old Rocky Ridge Road and Lorna Road, said Lt. Daniel Lowe.

The three suspects bailed from the vehicle and took off running.

Officers chased one of the suspects, catching him in the area of the Rocky Ridge Retirement Community.

The other two suspects were seen running from the crash scene and were captured on Sierra Drive.

The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office charged the suspects in four vehicle burglaries.

Chaney is charged with four counts of unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and attempting to elude. His bond was set at $35,500.

Smith and Jackson are charged with four counts of unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle and attempting to elude. Their bonds totaled $30,500 each.

Chaney and Smith have been released on bond. Jackson remains in the Jefferson County Jail on unrelated charges.
