Trinity cruises past Plainview, pulls off championship repeat
Trinity opened the second half with a 13-0 run and pulled away to beat Plainview 48-40 and win the Class 3A state title at the BJCC’s Legacy Arena on Friday afternoon.
It’s the second straight championship for coach Blake Smith’s squad. The Wildcats had never won one prior to 2023.
Trinity led 27-17 at the half and pushed it to 40-17 with the run to open the third quarter. The Wildcats held a 40-24 advantage after three.
The Bears used a 12-0 run to get back into the game and got as close as eight, 42-34, on Kami Sanders’ basket midway through the fourth. However, Mya Moskowitz hit a 3 to stop the Plainview run, and the Bears didn’t get that close again until a final 3-pointer at the buzzer.
The Bears finished 31-6. Trinity finished 27-6.
Trinity’s Maddie Smith was the MVP. She finished with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting and added three rebounds and four steals. Francie Morris followed with 13 and Mya Moskowitz had 11.
Gracie Rowell had 19 for Plainview. The Bears struggled from the field all day, finishing just 15-of-43 overall and 5-of-23 from 3.
