Trial date set for ALDOT director John Cooper on harassment charge
A trial date has been set Alabama Department of Transportation Director John Cooper in his arrest earlier this month on a harassment charge in Marshall County.
Court records show a trial date has been set for August 2.
There are still few details available surrounding the allegations facing Cooper. There are no details provided in Alabama’s online court records system.
Efforts to reach prosecutors in Marshall County were not immediately successful Friday morning. Cooper’s attorney George Barnett refused to comment.
Cooper, who has been ALDOT’s transportation director since 2011, was in the Marshall County Jail for about 30 minutes on June 12 before posting $500 bond on a charge of harassment/intimidation, according to jail records.
Barnett earlier appeared to suggest the arrest stemmed from a land dispute between Cooper and his neighbor.
“Mr. Cooper directed me to file a complaint for declaratory judgment cause of action in Marshall County Circuit Court regarding a neighbor who is falsely claiming an easement on Mr. Cooper’s property,” said Barnett.
The complaint about the land dispute has not been filed as of Friday morning.
Cooper, 75, has served as transportation director for ALDOT since his appointment by then-Gov. Robert Bentley in 2011.
Cooper was the CEO of Avocent Corp. in Huntsville from 2002 until 2008 and was also chairman of Avocent’s board from 2003-2008.
From 1996-2001, Cooper was chief financial officer and senior vice president finance and administration for Adtran Inc. of Huntsville, a global telecommunications provider.
