Trevon Diggs out to intercept his ‘buddy’ again
Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs has never played against the Philadelphia Eagles without coming away with an interception. In three games in the NFC East rivalry, Diggs has four interceptions.
If Diggs continues that pattern when the Cowboys and Eagles square off on Sunday night, he’ll probably be picking off former Alabama teammate Jalen Hurts again.

“Jalen Hurts, he’s really good,” Diggs said. “He’s just my buddy. We just compete. Every time I see him, I want to beat him, just like he want to beat me, so it’s kind of personal every time that I see him.”
Diggs came out on top the two times he’s played against Hurts with Dallas winning 37-17 on Dec. 27, 2020, and 41-21 on Sept. 27, 2021. Diggs had an interception in each of those victories. He had two interceptions on Nov. 1, 2020, against Philadelphia when Carson Wentz was still the Eagles’ quarterback.
Hurts has thrown two interceptions this season. Only one quarterback with at least as many passes as Hurts in 2022 has two or fewer interceptions (Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady with one).
“I see that he’s a lot better from last year,” Diggs said about Hurts. “I played with him. I know how hard he works, and I know his work ethic. I know he’s always going to get better every year, so we’ve just got to be prepared. He’s doing really good this season, and we just got to come ready.”
In his second season as a starter, Hurts has improved “his decision-making — he’s making the right decisions throwing the ball — his running ability, everything. His whole game increased,” Diggs said.
Diggs and Hurts played together for three seasons at Alabama. As a freshman wide receiver, Diggs caught 11 passes for 88 yards and one touchdown in 2016, when Hurts won the SEC Offensive Player of the Year Award.
Diggs has two interceptions this season, and after posting 11 interceptions in 2021 (the most in the NFL in 40 seasons), Diggs has 16 in his career. That ranks tied for 10th with Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Minkah Fitzpatrick among Alabama’s NFL alumni. Diggs is halfway to the Crimson Tide’s leader, Lee Roy Jordan, who had 32 interceptions in 187 NFL regular-season games. Diggs has played in 33.
Philadelphia has scored at least 24 points in every game this season. Dallas hasn’t allowed more than 19 points in any game this season.
The Eagles offense ranks fifth in points, second in yards, eighth in passing yards and fifth in rushing yards among the NFL’s 32 teams this season. The Cowboys defense ranks third in points allowed, seventh in yards allowed, seventh in passing yards allowed and 18th in rushing yards allowed.
Dallas has yielded only one rushing touchdown to its opponents this season. Hurts has been historically good at finding the end zone carrying the football.
If Hurts runs for a touchdown against Dallas, he’ll become the first quarterback in the league’s Super Bowl era with seven rushing TDs during his team’s first six games in a season.
Hurts has 19 rushing touchdowns in his 24 NFL starts, more than any other quarterback in league history has had in his first 25. Hurts is coming off his seventh game with at least two rushing TDs, tied for second-most in NFL history.

In Diggs’ two-interception game against Philadelphia, the Eagles won 23-9 as Dallas finished 6-10 with a defense that ranked 28th in points allowed in 2020.
“I feel like us just being together for two years played a big part in it,” Diggs said of the improvement of the Dallas defense since his rookie season. “It feels like a brotherhood just all around. And then on the defensive side, everyone knowing what to do, knowing their jobs, knowing how to do their job, knowing everyone’s strength and weaknesses and just playing to their strengths and getting the job done.”
The Eagles and Cowboys will meet at 7:20 p.m. CDT Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. NBC will televise the game.

The Eagles own the NFL’s only undefeated record, and a victory on Sunday night would make Philadelphia 6-0 for the first time since 2004. The Eagles won the NFC championship that season.
If the Cowboys win on Sunday night, Dallas would improve to 5-1. In the 19 seasons in which the Cowboys have been 5-1 or 6-0, they’ve reached the postseason every time.
