Tré Williams set to join South Alabama football staff

South Alabama is set to hire Tré Williams as its new special teams coordinator, a source told AL.com on Wednesday.

Williams, a Mobile native and former Auburn linebacker, is expected to be on the job with the Jaguars next week. South Alabama begins spring football practice March 17.

Williams will replace Jamael Lett, who took a job as a special teams analyst at North Carolina. Lett — also a Mobile native — spent the last two seasons as South Alabama’s special teams coordinator and as a defensive assistant working with the nickel safeties.

Williams starred at Mobile’s St. Paul’s Episcopal School before playing at Auburn under Gus Malzahn from 2014-17. He was a Tigers team captain as a senior, when he earned second-team All-SEC honors.

After briefly pursuing a pro football playing career, Williams worked in Auburn’s recruiting office and as an assistant coach at Thompson High School in the Birmingham area. He was a graduate assistant for Malzahn at Central Florida in 2021 before spending this past season as linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Division II Arkansas-Monticello.

Lett — who has also coached at Samford, Akron and Tennessee-Martin — is the second assistant coach to leave Kane Wommack’s South Alabama staff since the end of last season. Cornerbacks coach Dwike Wilson took a job at Southern Miss and was replaced by Jay Hopson.

Under Lett’s direction, South Alabama kicker Diego Guajardo was a second-team All-Sun Belt pick. Starting Husky (nickel) safety Yam Banks led the team in interceptions and was a first-team all-conference selection.
