Transfer guard includes Tide among finalists; 5-star target transfers into Big Ten

Alabama’s 2023-24 roster is currently in flux with three former starters weighing whether or not to enter the NBA Draft. Work needs to be done in the transfer portal and news Monday night clarified where the Crimson Tide stand.

Aaron Estrada, a guard who scored more than 1,200 points the last two years at Hofstra, included Alabama in his final four along with Kansas State, Cincinnati and Florida State. Estrada is listed as a four-star transfer and is 16th in the 247Sports rankings.

Estrada entered the portal on April 4 and reportedly heard from the Tide among 17 other schools. He’s listed at 6-foot-3 and has had stops at St. Peter’s (N.J.) University, where he grew up, and Oregon before heading to Hofstra. With an ability to score from 3-point range and at the rim, Estrada is an active guard that can mesh well in Nate Oats’ dribble-drive scheme.

“I think Oats is a great coach. I like their culture and their style of play matches mine. They do well with player development and getting there (sic) guys to the next level and that’s my ultimate goal,” Estrada told 247′s Travis Branham.

Estrada, a redshirt senior with one year of eligibility remaining, was a two-time Colonial Athletic Association player of the year and led Hofstra to the second round of the NIT after leading the team in points (18.5 per game), assists (5.0), steals (1.5) and minutes (37.2). He had three outings of at least 31 points, including a 40-point display at Elon on Jan. 26.

Since Nimari Burnett, Jaden Bradley and Delaney Heard have either transferred or are in the portal, Estarda’s experience could give Oats another veteran presence to guide the offense. Assuming Quinerly and Sears head to the pros, Alabama’s scholarship guards will consist of early-enrollee Davin Cosby, Rylan Griffen and Jaykwon Walton from Wichita State. A potential fill-in, Denver Jones, picked Auburn over the Tide on Saturday.

Meanwhile, another transfer target chose elsewhere as former Oregon center Kel’el Ware committed to Indiana. Ware a 7-footer and former five-star recruit, visited Bloomington, Indiana, last week and then canceled a trip to Tuscaloosa. The Tide has to also find some depth in the frontcourt, with Noah Clowney and Charles Bediako entertaining the idea of a pro career.
