Trading Mac Jones, Patriots adding $8 million quarterback

The New England Patriots are planning to trade former starting quarterback Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars after the new NFL business year starts on Wednesday, reports indicated on Sunday.

On Monday, when NFL teams could begin negotiating for players who will become free agents on Wednesday, the Patriots reached an agreement with Jacoby Brissett for the 2024 season. The quarterback is returning to his original NFL team for a one-year, $8 million contract, NFL Network reported.

Brissett cannot sign with New England until after 3 p.m. CDT Wednesday.

Jones is due to make $2.785 million in 2024, the final season of his four-year, $15.586 million contract signed after New England selected him from Alabama at No. 15 in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Jones worked as the Patriots’ starting quarterback for all 42 games that he played for New England. But the Patriots replaced the former Crimson Tide All-American with Bailey Zappe for the final six games of the 2023 campaign.

Reports on Sunday said New England would send Jones to the Jaguars for a sixth-round selection in the NFL Draft on April 27.

In his eighth NFL season, Brissett served as Sam Howell’s backup with the Washington Commanders in 2023. In three games, he completed 18-of-23 passes for 224 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Brissett might face a similar situation with another young quarterback in 2024, with New England holding the third pick in the NFL Draft.

Brissett will join Zappe and Nathan Rourke as the quarterbacks on New England’s roster. Zappe has eight starts in his two NFL seasons. A 10-game starter for the British Columbia Lions in 2022, Rourke has never played in an NFL regular-season game.

In 79 NFL regular-season games, with 48 starts, Brissett has completed 981-of-1,600 passes for 10,574 yards with 51 touchdowns and 23 interceptions for a passing-efficiency rating of 85.3.

Jones has completed 864-of-1,308 passes for 8,918 yards with 46 touchdowns and 36 interceptions and a passing-efficiency rating of 85.8 in his NFL career.
