Trader Joeâs chicken pilaf may contain rocks, USDA warns
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued a public health alert for a chicken pilaf previously sold at Trader Joe’s.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on Wednesday announced a public health alert due to concerns of a frozen ready-to-eat chicken pilaf product that may be contaminated with “foreign material,” specifically rocks.
The 14-oz. plastic packages contain “Trader Joe’s Chicken, Lentil, & Caramelized Onion Pilaf with saffron basmati rice, dark chicken meat, dates & golden raisins.” They were produced between November 1, 2023, and Jan. 19. The products were distributed to a number of stores nationwide.
According to the announcement, multiple consumers complained of rocks in the chicken pilaf. One consumer reported a dental injury from consuming the product.
The agency issued the public health notice to alert consumers that this product should not be consumed. In this case, a recall was not requested because the product is no longer available for purchase. Consumers with the product still in their freezer are urged to throw it away or return it to the store where it was purchased.
