Tractor-trailer driver killed after vehicle gets stuck, hit by train near Auburn

A tractor-trailer driver died Tuesday morning when his vehicle became stuck in a railroad crossing and was hit by a train near Auburn, authorities said.

Yancey C. Stephens, 54, of Opelika, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash around 7:50 a.m. Tuesday on Lee County Road 61 near Alabama State Route 14, said Sgt. Jeremy Burkett with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Stephens was driving a 2016 Mack tractor-trailer when the vehicle got stuck in the railroad crossing an was struck by a CSX train.

He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck, which occurred about five miles west of Auburn, authorities said.
