Florida State track star Trey Cunningham is the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Amateur Athlete of the Year for 2022-23.

Cunningham, a Winfield native, was NCAA champion last year in both the 60-meter indoor hurdles and 110-meter outdoor hurdles. He also won the Bowerman Award as the NCAA’s top track athlete, and finished second in both the USA Track & Field Championships and the World Championships.

Cunningham edged former Alabama quarterback Bryce Young for the award. Young was named ASWA Amateur Athlete of the Year in 2022.

Cunningham will be honored at the ASWA’s annual banquet this weekend in Jacksonville.
