Tornadoes, severe storms possible again in Alabama

Severe storms continued to roll across parts of Alabama on Sunday morning, and more severe weather will be possible through the day today.

A tornado watch continues for parts of south and south-central Alabama. It will last until noon CDT:

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center said a few strong tornadoes will be possible in the watch area, which also includes parts of Georgia. Large hail — up to 2.5 inches — and wind gusts up to 70 mph will also be possible.

SPC forecasters said “longer-lived supercells will pose a threat for tornadoes and very large hail through midday.”

Hail up to the size of baseballs, eggs and golf balls has been reported this morning in parts of south-central Alabama. It has damaged cars and blown out windows in homes, according to reports on social media.

The Alabama counties in the tornado watch are Autauga, Barbour, Bullock, Butler, Chambers, Chilton, Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Coosa, Crenshaw, Dallas, Elmore, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Monroe, Montgomery, Perry, Pike, Russell, Tallapoosa and Washington.

The National Weather Service has already issued multiple severe thunderstorm warnings for areas in south and south-central Alabama as of Sunday morning.

This is only the first wave of storms. Forecasters are expecting more to be possible later this afternoon and into the evening hours, and those storms could also be severe.

The Storm Prediction Center has a Level 3 out of 5, or enhanced, risk for severe weather in place for parts of south and south-central Alabama. A larger part of the the rest of the state also could see a few severe storms.

Tornadoes, damaging winds, hail and heavy rain will all be possible in Alabama through tonight, forecasters said.
