Tornado confirmed at Redstone Arsenal from Tuesday storms
A brief tornado touched down on Tuesday night in Madison County’s Redstone Arsenal.
There were no injuries.
The National Weather Service in Huntsville said it was an EF-0 tornado with top winds of 83 mph.
It touched town at 6:51 p.m. Tuesday just off Ranger Road and was on the ground for less than a quarter of a mile.
The weather service said the tornado “bent fencing while entering the property, then proceeded to shift dozens of 500 (pound) storage tanks, tossing about 3 of them. Another metal trough tank was also tipped over and tossed.”
The tornado then struck a metal building and caused the western side of the building to collapse. Some of the building’s contents were thrown downwind for several hundred yards, according to the weather service.
The tornado then quickly dissipated just short of Saturn Drive, the weather service said.
Tornadoes were not exactly expected in north Alabama on Tuesday; the worst of the severe weather was expected in south Alabama, where there was a Level 2 severe weather risk in place.
But a few storms developed and then began to rotate in north Alabama Tuesday evening, and meteorologists picked up a tornado debris signature (or TDS) on radar.
MAY 20 TORNADO COUNT IS AT 17 STATEWIDE
The weather service in Huntsville also recently added to the tornado count from another round of severe storms on May 20.
The weather service has identified a total of 14 tornado tracks (including two that started as waterspouts) in north Alabama from May 20.
The weather service in Birmingham also confirmed three tornadoes in central Alabama from the May 20 storms.
