Topps commemorates Birmingham-Southern baseball with official trading card

Birmingham-Southern College is closing Friday, but the school’s baseball team will continue in baseball lore, thanks to Topps.

The company announced it is producing a limited-run card featuring the Panthers team. The card will feature the team celebrating their NCAA Super Regional win over Denison on May 25.

Birmingham-Southern College is closing after financial struggles and being unable to secure a $30 million dollar loan. The team is being shadowed by a documentary film crew, which has been chronicling every step of Birmingham-Southern’s wild ride.

The Panthers have gone 19-4 since BSC’s closing was announced in March to earn an at-large NCAA regional berth.

A portion of the proceeds, per Topps, from these cards will be given to the baseball program. The company will also distribute the cards to players, friends and family.

Birmingham-Southern breezed through the Transylvania regional in Lexington, Kentucky. The Panthers beat the host team 21-7 and 5-2 and knocked off No. 1 seed Spaulding 4-2, playing perhaps their best baseball at the right time.
