Toothbrush sharpened into shank used to assault Dothan jail inmate, police say; 3 other inmates charged

A Dothan City Jail inmate was assaulted over the weekend with a toothbrush that had been sharpened into a point, police said.

Officers responded to the assault Sunday. They found the victim suffering from a facial injury from the toothbrush that had been fashioned into a shank.

Dothan police said the suspect, Tark Tramon Hawkins, 25, was having a verbal altercation with the victim. Another inmate, Zyshawn Codaun Coker, 21, handed the weapon to Hawkins.

Hawkins assaulted his fellow inmate, police said, and then put it down.

A third inmate, Romillo Jamal Porter, 27, retrieved the weapon and hid it in a cell. Officers searched the cell and recovered the weapon.

All three inmates have been charged.

Hawkins is charged with second-degree assault and first-degree promoting prison contraband.

Coker and Porter are each charged with one count of first-degree promoting prison contraband.

All of the charges are felony crimes. The three suspects have been moved to the Houston County Jail where they are being held without bond.

The victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
