Toddler boy dies 3 days after Birmingham crash on I-59 that killed 10-year-old girl

A 3-year-old boy has died following a weekend crash in Birmingham that also killed a 10-year-old girl.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the young traffic fatality victim as Za’Quarrius Kelly. He lived in Bessemer.

His God sister, WJ Christian fifth grader Tia Williams, died Saturday.

The multi-vehicle crash happened at 1:10 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 59 southbound near Oporto Madrid Boulevard.

Additional details about the crash were not released but family said Tia, her mother, her 16-year-old broth and Za’Quarrius were driving on the interstate when a vehicle struck them from behind, and then another.

Tia was pronounced dead at the hospital at 2:06 p.m. Saturday.

Za’Quarrius died at 3:02 p.m. Tuesday at Children’s of Alabama.

Tia’s mother and 16-year-old brother have been released from the hospital.

Veronica Jones, Tia’s grandmother and Za’Quarrius Godmother, said the families are heartbroken.

Earlier this week, Jones put out a request to find the Good Samaritans who stopped to help. She said Wednesday they did come forward.

“They are my heroes,’’ she said.
