‘Today’ host Jenna Bush Hager recalls spring break trip to Flora-Bama

Whether or not you want the president’s daughters hitting the Flora-Bama at spring break remains an open question. But 20 or so years later, it apparently remains a good memory for Jenna Bush Hager, one of George W. Bush’s twin daughters.

The subject happened to come up recently on “Today with Hoda and Jenna,” a corner of the “Today” show franchise that Jenna Bush Hager co-hosts with Hoda Kotb. Willie Geist, filling in for Kotb, asked Hager to share one of her favorite spring break memories.

“I bet you, Jenna, have good spring break stories,” he said.

“That is so typical. Because I used to be wild?” said Hager, over Geist’s objections. “I didn’t say anything about wild,” he protested.

“Okay, I will say one that was fun, we once did a road trip from Austin, Texas, to the Flora-Bama,” she said. “I can’t remember exactly where we were staying in Alabama, but somewhere on the beaches of Alabama, shows you how fun the trip was. And the Flora-Bama is this really funny, cool bar, on the line.”

Geist brought up the famed Mullet Toss, although not by name. “Is that the place where they throw the fish across the state line?” he asked.

“I wasn’t there for that part” said his baffled co-host.

“There’s a thing,” said Geist.

NBC doesn’t seem to have an official clip of the segment posted, but someone caught a video as it aired and shared it with the Flora-Bama, which put it on its Facebook page last week. That prompted a memory or two.

“It was 20 years ago on their college spring break,” said one commenter. “They stayed on West Beach in Gulf Shores, Alabama in a beach rental house. I saw them both several times that week in our store on the beach. The secret service followed them around all week. The war started right after they left and went back to college.”

“Omg i bet shes talking about several years ago we were told the bush twins rented a beach house in gulf shores and were partying hardy!!!” wrote another. “Tons of cops. We were in gulf shores at the time as well!”

“Throwing fish,” said a third. “We’re sounding real crazy. Love it.”

The Bush twins passed through their college years during their father’s presidency, and were cited for some incidents of underage drinking, a low-key scandal that made headlines and provided plenty of grist for their behavior to be satirized by “Saturday Night Live” and other outlets. In a 2017 New York Times interview, they said they had been embarrassed but also frustrated by what they saw as exaggerations.

They later published a memoir, “Sisters First: Stories From Our Wild And Wonderful Life.”
