Titans cut former Tide DB in Mobile prep stars exchange

An injury to one former Mobile prep star has put another in line to play for the Tennessee Titans on Sunday while costing a former Alabama standout his spot on the NFL active roster.

The Titans signed cornerback Eric Garror and defensive tackle Jaleel Johnson from their practice squad and waived defensive back Shyheim Carter and linebacker Chance Campbell from their active roster on Saturday.

Roger McCreary, a high school standout at Williamson before playing at Auburn, has handled the slot-corner duties for Tennessee this season. But the Titans ruled him out of Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons on Friday afternoon because of a hamstring injury.

Earlier Friday, Tennessee coach Mike Vrabel said Garror would be the top candidate to replace McCreary if the second-year cornerback couldn’t play on Sunday. Vrabel also said Garror might be a candidate to return punts, too. The Titans have used three punt returners this season.

A high school standout at McGill-Toolen who played collegiately at Louisiana, Garror signed with Tennessee as an undrafted rookie in May and stuck with the Titans on the practice squad after being waived at the end of the preseason.

Garror had been elevated once off the practice squad this season, and he got on the field for one special-teams play in Tennessee’s 27-24 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 17.

To make a spot on the 53-player active roster, the Titans waived Carter.

The former Alabama defensive back was released for the ninth time in his career four weeks after he made his NFL regular-season debut. Carter, who entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2020, played in Tennessee’s 27-3 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals as a practice-squad elevation on Oct. 1.

After Carter had 11 defensive snaps and 11 special-team plays in that game, the Titans signed him to their active roster the day before a 24-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Oct. 15, when he got 13 defensive snaps and six special-teams plays.

The Titans and the Falcons play at noon CDT Sunday at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.
