Titanicâs first-class dinner menu sold at auction for $80,000
A first-class menu from the ill-fated Titanic has sold at auction.
The menu was part of a collection of items from the doomed vessel that is being sold by British auction house Henry Aldridge and Son Ltd.
The ship collided with an iceberg during its maiden voyage across the Atlantic on the night of April 14, 1912, completely sinking less than three hours later. The tragedy resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people.
However, passengers in first class had multiple options for dinner a few days earlier on April 11. Entrees included sirloin of beef with horseradish cream and pureed parsnips, salmon, lamb and duck with port wine sauce. Sides included peas, potatoes and oysters, while tarts, pudding, ice cream and cake were available for dessert.
The rare item offers a glimpse of what life aboard the ship was like before disaster struck.
It sold for £66,000 ($80,000) on Saturday, The Mirror reported.
The auction house said it has been unable to track down any other menus from the ship after consulting with museums and a number of private collectors.
Items that have already sold include a blanket a survivor wrapped themselves in on one of the lifeboats, a pocket watch that stopped when it went into the freezing North Atlantic, a deck chair, the telegraph from the RMS Carpathia —the ship that came to the survivors’ aid after receiving a distress call —ship officer Harold Lowe’s telescope and the violin bandleader Wallace Hartley played as the ship sank which sold for $1,454,400 several weeks ago.
