Time is running out to get a Birmingham-Southern College car tag

Birmingham-Southern College supporters have until the end of this month to purchase a BSC car tag, according to the college.

Birmingham-Southern announced in March it will close permanently on May 31.

However, supporters can buy their own BSC tag until April 30. If you already have a BSC tag, April 30 will also be the last day to renew.

“When you purchase the BSC specialty license plate, the college receives $48.75 as a charitable contribution, you share your pride in BSC, and you contribute to the education of deserving students,” an announcement on the school website states, despite the impending deadline.

The small, private liberal arts college announced last winter that, after years of financial troubles, it would need support from the state to stay open. After failed attempts in the Alabama Legislature to secure a loan, the school’s board of trustees announced it would close. More than 200 people are expected to lose their jobs without severance pay.

The cost for a BSC tag is $50, plus the standard registration fee of $24.25 to purchase a license plate.

Last year, 1,202 Alabamians opted for BSC license plates, according to the Alabama Department of Revenue. By contrast, the school’s current enrollment is less than 1,000.
