Thursday Roundup: Jackson freshman RB stars, Homewood also wins
Freshman EJ Crowell ran for 202 yards and four touchdowns on Thursday night as Class 4A No. 3 Jackson defeated Class 7A Davidson 45-14.
Both teams are headed to the playoffs next week.
Crowell rushed 10 times for 50 yards and a touchdown in the first half but exploded for 152 yards and three touchdowns on six carries in the second half.
Sophomore South Carolina commit Landon Duckworth completed 13-of-25 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown and rushed three times for 42 yards.
Nasir Powell caught six passes for 64 yards, while Keeyun Chapman had three receptions for 76 yards and a TD.
Coastal Carolina commit DJ Butler had a 12-yard TD reception for the Warriors. Terrance Gray had a rushing touchdown.
Jackson improved to 9-0 and will host Round 1 of the playoffs next week. Davidson (5-5) will travel to Class 7A No. 1 Central-Phenix City.
BIRMINGHAM
Homewood 38, Jasper 14
Homewood blitzed to a 38-0 halftime lead and earned a 38-14 victory over Jasper at Waldrop Stadium.
Will Myers ran eight times for 157 yards and three touchdowns for the Patriots, while Altovise Crear added 54 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Kylen Newell also caught a touchdown pass.
For Jasper (1-9), Micah Pledger ran 34 times for 178 yards and scored two second-half touchdowns. Pledger had the majority of the Vikings’ 234 yards of total offense.
Homewood ran 22 times for 214 yards in the first half – an average of 9.7 yards per carry.
Homewood (6-4) has won six of its last seven games heading into the first round of the Class 6A playoffs next week. Jasper did not qualify for the playoffs.
Montevallo 41, Tarrant 21
Braxton King threw three touchdown passes and Razareo Conwell ran for three more as the Bulldogs beat Tarrant at home on Thursday. Montevallo improved to 7-3 on the season while Tarrant falls to 3-7.
King hit Deterrius Cutts for touchdowns from 30 and 20 yards, sandwiched around a 20-yard TD pass to Christian Tolbert.
Montevallo led 20-6 at the half before the Wildcats trimmed the lead to 20-13 in the third. Conwell’s 1-yard touchdown pushed the home team to a 27-13 advantage. The junior running back closed out Montevallo’s scoring with TD runs of 6 and 48 yards in the fourth quarter.
King was 9-for-16 on the night for 158 yards. Conwell ran 24 times for 191 yards and Cutts had five catches for 124 yards.
HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY
Fyffe 21, Sylvania 10
Class 2A No. 2-ranked Fyffe wrapped up the regular season with a win over Class 3A No. 7 Sylvania.
The Red Devils led 14-7 at the half behind two Logan Anderson touchdowns. Logan’s cousin, Zach Anderson, scored the lone touchdown for Sylvania. Conner Andrade booted a field goal to cut the Red Devils lead to 14-10 with 2:03 left in the third quarter, but Logan Anderson’s seven-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter increasing the lead to 21-10 proved to be enough for Paul Benefield’s team.
Fyffe (9-1) will host West End in the first round of the playoffs next week, while Sylvania (8-2) will welcome Vinemont.
