Thursday Baseball Roundup: Highlights, scores from statewide playoff games
Three Valley pitchers limited Holtville to seven hits and no runs in two games as the Rams advanced to the Class 5A state semifinals with a 1-0, 2-0 sweep of Holtville on Thursday.
Valley improved to 26-5 with the win and will play Mobile Christian in the semifinals next week.
Jackson Sanders allowed four hits and struck out 13 in the opener for the Rams. Valley scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the third when C.J. Chambley walked with the bases loaded.
In Game 2, Chambley and Matthew McDonald combined on a three-hitter. Chambley pitched the first six innings to get the win. McDonald pitched the final inning for the save.
Valley scored single runs in the second and sixth innings. Ty Monteith and Carter Green had the RBIs.
CLASS 6A
Oxford 6-2, Mountain Brook 5-4
Third-ranked Mountain Brook forced a deciding game with a 4-2 victory over second-ranked Oxford in Thursday’s quarterfinal series.
Oxford (30-10) hosts Game 3 against Mountain Brook (30-7) at 5 p.m. on Friday
Mountain Brook led 4-0 going into the final inning of Game 2 when the Yellow Jackets loaded the bases on 2 walks and a single. Ty Shotts came on in relief for the second walk then got a fielder’s choice and a strikeout for the second out.
Reliever Kenneth Diddell hit Forrest Heacock with the bases loaded, cutting the margin to 4-2, before striking out the final batter.
Mountain Brook starter Caleb Barnett pitched 6 strong shutout innings, scattering 6 hits before the seventh inning comeback attempt. The final line showed 11 strikeouts with 2 runs.
He also added a 2-run homer in the fifth inning for the 4-run lead.
The Spartans scored their first 2 runs on bases-loaded walks, Sam Estes in the first inning and Paul Barnett in the third.
Caleb Barnett was 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs and a run while John Robicheaux had a double and scored 2 runs.
Oxford scored all 6 runs in the fifth inning of Game 1 after Mountain Brook surged to 5-0 lead. Reid Maniscalco’s 2-run homer was the big blow while Canaan Whitman and RJ Brooks had run-scoring singles and Rocco Maniscalco had run-scoring double. A Mountain Brook balk also accounted for a run.
Mountain Brook scored 3 runs in the first with bases-loaded walks from Bennett Love and Estes and a run-scoring single by Paul Barnett.
Brooks Allen’s run-scoring double in the third and Love’s run-scoring single in the fourth inning made it 5-0. Love led the Spartans offense with 2 hits, 2 RBIs and a run.
Whitman pitched the win, throwing 2 hittless innings.
Mountain Brook held the Yellow Jackets to 6 hits, 4 coming in the fifth inning.
CLASS 5A
Alexandria 7, Sardis 0
Top-ranked Alexandria got strong pitching and a pair of home runs to earn the Game 3 victory and advance to semifinal play next week.
Pitcher Brayton Goode threw the complete-game shutout, striking out 10 and scattering 6 hits against second-ranked Sardis (22-13).
Ryan Brown’s 2-run homer in the second inning put the Valley Cubs (27-9) on the board and Jacob Slaton’s grand slam was part of a 5-run fourth inning.
Slaton was 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs and a run while Brown was 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs.
Carson Gillilan was 2-for-2 and Russ Wiggs had a double for Sardis.
Alexandria hosts Springville next week.
CLASS 2A
Bayshore Christian 7-7, Pike Liberal Arts 4-10
Third-ranked Pike Liberal Arts rallied from a 6-2 deficit in the second game to force Game 3 on Friday.
The Patriots (28-6) scored four runs in the fourth and four more in the sixth to salvage their season against Bayshore Christian (17-13). The two teams will decide the series at 5 p.m. Friday.
Trailing 10-7, the Eagles loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, but PLA escaped any damage and went on to win and gain the split.
Peyton Elliott homered and drove in two for the Patriots. Luke Barron, Matthew Brookins and Cole Garrott each had two RBIs as well. Dawson Bradford picked up the win in relief, allowing three hits and no runs in 3.1 innings.
Jack Malone, who homered in both games for Bayshore, went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks in Game 2. The Eagles used five pitchers.
Malone homered and got a complete-game win on the mound as the Eagles won Game 1. Malone went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead the offense. Jace Jones added two hits and Cory Parker had two RBIs.
On the mound, Malone scattered six hits and allowed four runs – all unearned. He struck out four and walked three. The two teams combined for nine errors (five for Bayshore, four for PLA).
