Thursday area softball roundup: Hewitt-Trussville, Athens earn titles

Hewitt-Trussville used the long ball and two big innings to win a pair of games against Spain Park and earn the Class 7A, Area 6 title on Thursday.

The second-ranked Huskies (39-7) beat Chelsea 10-6 in the elimination bracket and needed two wins after seventh-ranked Spain Park won Wednesday’s game against Hewitt-Trussville.

The Huskies scored four runs in the sixth inning of Game 1 against Spain Park, leading to a 5-2 win, then scored seven runs in the fourth inning of Game 2 on the way to a 11-5 victory.

Hewitt-Trussville trailed 5-1 in the fourth inning of Game 2 before Ahkeela Honeycutt hit a two-run homer and Olivia Faggard blasted a three-run shot to give the Huskies the lead for good.

Chaney Peters and Faggard each doubled home two runs in the sixth for the final margin.

Faggard was 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the clinching game while Peters had three RBIs and Honeycutt added two.

Sara Phillips pitched the complete game win, allowing seven hits and five runs while striking out eight.

Maggie Daniel had a two-run homer for Spain Park and Ella Ussery added a two-run single.

Hewitt-Trussville scored four runs in the sixth inning to overcome a 1-0 deficit in the 5-2 Game 1 victory.

Trailing 1-0 in the sixth inning of Game 1, the Huskies tied the game on Faggard’s RBI-double and took the lead for good on Lexie Kelly’s three-run homer. Peters added a solo shot in the seventh.

Zaylen Tucker gave up four hits and struck out eight to earn the win.

The top two teams in each of 16 areas in Class 1A-6A and eight areas in Class 7A advance from the double-elimination tournament to one of four regionals set to begin play on May 9.

The North Regional is at Coffee O’Neal Park in Florence, East Regional at Albertville’s Sand Mountain Park, Central Regional at Montgomery’s Lagoon Park and South Regional at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

Second-ranked Athens scored all 14 runs in the first three innings to earn the area title.

Abby Tucker was 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs and RBI while Haley Waggoner had a home run and three RBIs, Mya Clark added a double and two RBIs and Cori Campbell was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.

Clark pitched three hitless innings with two strikeouts while Campbell had four strikeouts and allowed a hit in two innings.

Sydie Sampson had Hazel Green’s lone hit.
