Three of the top 10 American-made vehicles come from Alabama

Three of the vehicles in Cars.com’s top 10 American-made vehicles list are made in Alabama, and 12 different models on the top 100 list hail from the Yellowhammer State.

The list is a change from previous years, when as many as four Alabama-made vehicles made the top 10. However, models from four different state-based automakers made the list.

Cars.com has compiled the list for the past 18 years, which evaluates vehicles contributing the most to the U.S. economy for manufacturing, parts sourcing and employment. This year’s tally also shows the rise of electric and hybrid vehicles. Jenni Newman, Cars.com editor-in-chief, said half of the top 10 are EVs this year, and roughly 1 in 5 vehicles on the full list is electrified.

The Tesla Model Y is No. 1 on the list, made in Austin, Texas. In fact, Tesla takes up the first four spots.

Honda leads the way for Alabama, with the Lincoln plant making all three of the state’s entries into the top 10. Checking in at No. 5 is the Honda Passport SUV, with the Honda Odyssey minivan placing No. 7. At No. 9 is the Honda Ridgeline pickup.

Just outside the top 10 is the the Honda Pilot SUV at 15.

At 29 is the Hyundai Santa Fe SUV, followed closely by the Hyundai Santa Cruz pickup at 31, and the Hyundai Tucson SUV at 40th – all made in Montgomery.

Mercedes-Benz’s GLE SUV, made in Vance, is ranked at 58th.

At 80 is the Mazda CX-50 SUV, made in Huntsville at the joint Mazda-Toyota plant, followed closely by the Mercedes-Benz GLS SUV at 81.

A few slots down are Alabama’s electric vehicle entries – the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, and the Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid SUV. Both Mercedes and Hyundai have invested heavily in electric vehicle manufacturing in Alabama within the last five years.
