Thompson High QB named National Freshman of the Year

Thompson High quarterback Trent Seaborn has been named the MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year.

Seaborn led his team to the Class 7A championship game in 2023.

He completed 195 of 271 for 2,590 yards and 27 touchdowns.

“He has God-given talent,” His coach, Mark Freeman, told AL.com last summer. “It’s been crazy to watch him grow. Now, he’s developed into a really good quarterback. He’s also a great young man, very mature for his years.”

Previous MaxPreps Freshmen of the year include Nick Bosa (2012), Trevor Lawrence (2014), Arch Manning (2019), Bryce Underwood (2021) and Julian Lewis (2022).

The last Alabama high school player to be named Freshman of the Year was Ronnie Royal of Alexandria in 2020. Royal transferred to Gulf Shores following that season and led the Dolphins to the Class 5A state title last month.

Seaborn took over as Thompson’s quarterback as an eighth-grader in the playoffs in 2022 and helped the team to a fourth straight state title. He was MVP of the title game win over Auburn when he threw five touchdown passes.

The 6-foot-1, 179-pounder already lists multiple college offers including Alabama, Arkansas, Nebraska, Oregon, Ole Miss and Oregon.

“He grew substantially this year,” Freeman said Wednesday of Seaborn. “We still have a long way to go. He is no where near a perfect product, but he knows that. He’s shown substantial growth and improvement, and he already has gone into this offseason trying to be a leader.

“His football talent has always been really good, but I think he found out in the championship game (a loss to Central-Phenix City) that he is not where he needs to be. I think he has some things now that he knows he needs to work on, and he is doing that.”
