Thompson earns 1st-round playoff victory over Florence

Thompson earned its 17th straight playoff victory by beating Florence 42-0 on Thursday night in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs at Warriors Stadium in Alabaster.

Freshman quarterback Trent Seaborn completed 25-of-29 passes for 343 yards and three touchdowns. Seanborn’s TD passes covered 38 yards to Michael Dujon, 28 yards to Angel Jones and 13 yards to Deuce Oliver, and he also scored on a 4-yard run.

“I was proud of the way we played tonight,” Thompson coach Mark Freeman said. “We made some mistakes and it wasn’t perfect, but I thought we played a lot better from an energy standpoint.”

The game ended midway through the third quarter after a Florence receiver suffered an injury after catching a pass, which led to a lengthy delay. Medical personnel immobilized the player, who was wearing No. 9, on a backboard, which is protocol for a player who may have suffered a head, neck or spinal cord injury. He was placed into an ambulance to be taken to an area hospital. No other information was immediately available.

Thompson’s AJ Green ran seven times for 51 yards, including TD runs of 1 and 7 yards. He also caught eight passes for a team-high 98 yards.

The Warriors (9-1) won their fifth straight game and stayed on track for a fifth straight Class 7A championship.

Stat sheet: Florence finished with only 116 yards – 55 rushing and 61 passing. … Florence finished 1-of-11 on third-down conversions. … Dujon finished with seven catches for 94 yards.

Spreading the wealth: Thompson quarterbacks completed passes to seven different receivers, as back-up quarterback Zach Sims and Brooks Byars also attempted passes.

Streaks continue: Florence has now lost in the first round of the playoff in three straight seasons. Two of those losses – in 2021 and this season – were to Thompson.

Thompson, meanwhile, earned a first-round win for the seventh straight season.

What’s next?: Thompson advances to next week’s second round of the 7A playoffs against Friday’s winner of Austin vs. Vestavia Hills, while the season ends for Florence.
