This north Alabama stock shot up nearly 20%

It was a familiar down day on our Huntsville and Alabama Stock Report on Wednesday, but don’t say that to Steelcase, Inc.

The Grand Rapids, Michigan-based office furniture-maker, which has its biggest plant in Athens where it employs nearly 800, soared 19.3% to hit a 52-week high of $10.51.

Why the jump? After the close of the market on Tuesday, Steelcase reported better-than-expected second-quarter financial results. Investors certainly liked that news.

Otherwise, the dominant percentages were on the negative side. WestRock led the decliners at -3.7%. Adtran, the Huntsville-based telecommunications equipment company, fell 1.7%.

Overall, U.S. stocks slumped Wednesday after the Federal Reserve said it may not cut interest rates next year by as much as it earlier thought, regardless of how much Wall Street wants it.

The S&P 500 fell 41.75, or 0.9%, to 4,402.20. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 76.85, or 0.2%, to 34,440.88, and the Nasdaq composite dropped 209.06, or 1.5%, to 13,469.13.
