This hurricane-proof Florida house can be yours for $500,000

A practical house is nabbing some attention on social media thanks to both its shape and the fact that it can withstand some of nature’s harshest conditions.

It’s a spacious dome home that has a garage that’s nearly identical on the exterior to its live-in twin. Located in Melbourne, Florida, the house — which is listed for $500,000 — has quite the reputation, according to those who live near it, according to Zillow Gone Wild, a Facebook page and X (formerly Twitter) that highlights unique properties for sale.

It’s even popular in print.

“Stand out from the crowd in this futuristic home — the ultimate in unique architecture,” the listing on Zillow.com says. “Featured in Popular Science magazine, this amazing award winning geodesic dome sets the standard for innovative design and sustainable living.”

But the biggie, of course, is the fact that the three-bedroom, three-bathroom is hurricane proof.

“Built to withstand nature’s fury, you can rest easy knowing the structure is capable of withstanding a (Category 5) hurricane and most of the doors and windows are impact resistant!” the listing points out.

Other features include:

  • Balcony
  • Large closet space
  • Built-in storage
  • Loft space
  • Unfinished bonus room above garage

People on Zillow Gone Wild were both intrigued by the 1,907-square-foot home, and some brought their A-game when it came to the jokes.

“This home is in the Indian River. I used to drive by it often. Cool place!!” one person said on Facebook.

“It’s hilarious but I love it. 10/10 would live there. And survive every hurricane that came by,” another expressed.

“A beautiful potato igloo!” someone joked.

“I love this house every time I drive past it,” one person said.

“Glamping with the Jetsons?” another asked.

“Say what you want but dome houses are the only 100% hurricane proof dwellings in Florida,” someone posted on X.

What if we kiss in front of the boob house?” one person joked.

The matching dog house is what really sold if for me!” another posted.

Melbourne is about a 70-mile southeast drive from Orlando.
