This fruit increased in price more than any other in the South in the last month
After more than a year of record-high inflation, we’re starting to see grocery prices start falling even though progress is slow.
The overall cost of groceries fell over the course of March and April for the first time since September 2020, Stacker reported. The drop over the past couple of months has been largely fueled by decreases in eggs – which had previously risen dramatically over a short period of time – as well as meats, fruits and vegetables and dairy products.
That doesn’t mean inflation has just gone away. The overall cost of groceries in April remained up 7.1% from 2022.
Stacker recently used monthly data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to find the grocery items that experienced the largest price increase over the last month in the South. For the purpose of the analysis, the South includes Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Washington, D.C., Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. Stacker excluded some hyper-specific meat categories in order to better understand grocery price fluctuations more broadly.
