This city has the most âhouse poorâ homeowners in Alabama
If you spend more than 30% of your income on housing, you may be ‘house poor.’ And nearly a third of homeowners in one of Alabama’s largest cities fits that bill.
Data from the U.S. Census Bureau gathered by chamberofcommerce.org shows 31.5% of homeowners in Mobile spend more than 30% of their income on housing costs. That was the highest rate among large cities in Alabama, and good for 54th highest among all large cities in the United States.
According to the data, the median monthly housing cost in Mobile was $1,201. That’s the secondmost in Alabama among the four cities included on the list, behind only $1,290 in Huntsville. But where those two cities differ is in income.
Huntsville has the highest median household income of the state’s four big cities, dwarfing the others at over $100,000 per year. Second-place Montgomery had a median household income of less than $70,000 per year, according to the data.
That high income in Huntsville helped it have the lowest rate of ‘house poor’ residents in the state, among residents of large cities. Just 14% of homeowners in the Rocket City fit the criteria to be considered ‘house poor.’

Birmingham also ranked inside the top 100 nationally. The 28.2% of residents that were spending more than 30% of their income on housing costs ranked No. 84 in the United States, and second highest in Alabama.
At just under $64,000 per year, Birmingham’s median household income was the lowest of all the state’s big cities, but housing was significantly more affordable there.
Montgomery sat at just over a quarter of residents paying more than 30% in housing costs.
