This 9-acre Florida compound could be the most expensive home sold in US history

There is nothing like it — anywhere, the realtor says.

It’s a “natural oasis” and the “ultimate setting for creating a lifestyle of custom luxury. With pristine beaches bordering the clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico, a 231-foot yacht basin and your own dock, the opportunities for fun, adventure and relaxation are endless.”

Interested? It can all be yours for a cool $295 million — an asking price which would make it the most expensive residential property ever sold in the U.S., according to the Wall Street Journal.

It was in 1985 Pittsburgh financier John Donahue spotted an uninhabited piece of land in Naples along the Gulf of Mexico on Florida’s west coast and spent about $1 million to purchase a 4.3-acre parcel which had nothing more than a fishing cottage surrounded by mangroves.

Over the years to come, Donahue and his wife, Rhodora, would acquire some 60 acres of property in the area, building homes and retreats for their ever-expanding large family.

Now what the Journal calls the “crown jewel” of the Port Royal estate, called Gordon Pointe, is on the market following the deaths of both John (in 2017) and Rhodora (in 2022).

At Gordon Pointe, the Donahues built three residences, starting with an 11,500-square-foot main home, built around 1989 and featuring six bedrooms and a screen-in pool. A second residence, built about 1990, has about 5,500 square feet, with five bedrooms and its own outdoor pool. In 2013, a third house was added, with 5,800 square feet and another outdoor pool. There is also a dock which can accommodate about six boats.

The luxury compound played host to numerous dignitaries and celebrities over the years, the Journal reported, including former President George H.W. Bush and former First Lady Barbara Bush; legendary golfer Arnold Palmer; and former Florida governor and presidential candidate Jeb Bush.

Gordon Pointe is being marketed by the Dawn McKenna Group/Coldwell Banker Realty, along with the Leighton Candler Team of Cororan and Rory McMullen of Savills.

In all, the compound covers almost 400,000 square feet, with about 730 feet of Gulf beachfront, 930 along Gordon Pass and Naples Bay, and a yacht basin of 231 feet. There’s also room for another 200,000 square feet of residential development, according to South Florida Agent magazine.

The decision to sell the Gordon Pointe property was made at the family office, where each of the couple’s 13 children holds a seat on the board of directors. Bill Donahue is the chairman.

The current record for most expensive residential property sold in the U.S. is $240 million for a penthouse on Billionaire’s Row in Manhattan in 2019.

The Florida record for a residential property is $173 million for an estate near Palm Beach in 2022, according to the Palm Beach Daily News.
