Thieves steal Birmingham garbage truck, use it to rip off ATM
Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identify two suspects who stole an ATM with a stolen City of Birmingham garbage truck.
Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched just before 4 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, to the 1600 block of Forestdale Plaza on a report of the stolen ATM.
Lt. Joni Money said investigators determined that the thieves used the garbage truck and a chain to uproot the ATM from its base.
The machine was quickly recovered in the 1300 block of Heflin Avenue after deputies followed the trail of debris.
The thieves failed in getting any money out of the ATM, Money said.
The garbage truck was stolen earlier that same morning from a parking lot in west Birmingham. It was recovered later that afternoon.
Birmingham police Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said no arrests have been made in the theft of the truck.
Money said video footage shows two suspects dressed in all black, with their faces covered, connecting the chain with a tow hook to the ATM.
