‘They need you’: Mobile restaurants, bars dig out after big snow
As Mobile-area restaurants and nightspots began to dig out from this week’s historic snowstorm, one of them offered up a plea for patrons.
“Small Favor,” the proprietors of old-school burger joint Roshell’s Café and Diner said in a Facebook post. “When all the snow & ice clears up, support/shop/eat your favorite small businesses first. They’ve likely missed at least 2 days of work, which could make or break their bills for this month. They need you, and honestly, your community needs them.”
If you’re craving one of the venue’s famed Steer Burgers, the closure will end soon: “We’ll reopen Thursday, so call for take out, or drop in to resocialize after being cooped up inside,” said the post. (Roshell’s is at 2906 Spring Hill Ave.; call 251-479-4614.)

At least one venue didn’t miss a beat: Veet’s on Royal Street. Gina Jo Previto, part of the owning family, said she’d opened Tuesday night because she was aware there was a horticulture convention in town and those folks needed someplace friendly to go.
“I live two miles from here, I went five miles an hour,” she said. She didn’t ask any employees to make the trip, just operated the family bar on her own, with music from the jukebox rather than the bandstand.
“Everybody was looking for food, for one thing,” Previto said. She sympathized with restaurant operators, who needed a full staff to open. Most owners weren’t about to make employees drive in Tuesday’s conditions, she said.
“It was a very decent night,” she said. For one thing, Previto knew her clientele were walking across the street from local hotels, not driving, so it was safe. For another, she took advantage of conditions to make the first-ever Veet’s snowman, a small but distinctive version with cocktail straws for arms and olives for eyes.
Previto said she planned to open again at 4 p.m. Wednesday, and this time might have a pot of chili on hand.
Elsewhere in the Port City, it was clear the freeze had left its mark but the thaw was coming fast. (Best overall advice: Check with a given venue before leaving the house.)
B-Bob’s and the Flip Side Bar & Patio announced via Facebook that they would be closed Wednesday night “due to the hazard of black ice on the streets.”
Callaghan’s Irish Social Club posted video on Tuesday of a golf cart towing a snowboarder through its neighborhood. Wednesday morning it alerted patrons via Facebook that it might possibly be ready for action by Wednesday evening, but later opted out.
“Snow’s got us tappin’ out for the day, folks!” the venue said via Facebook. “Callaghan’s is takin’ a little winter siesta, but don’t worry—we’ll be back soon with all the burgers, beers, and tunes you love. Stay warm, OGD, and we’ll catch you after the thaw!”
The Haberdasher, a downtown venue recently included in a list of the nation’s “Top Whisky Bars,” had told regulars that it would be “WIDE DAMN OPEN” Monday night but closed Tuesday.
“Wednesday *should* be back to business as usual,” operators posted Monday afternoon. “Stay warm and remember, don’t eat the yellow snow.”
Heroes Sports Bar reported that its downtown and west Mobile locations would be closed Wednesday.
At The Merry Widow on Conti Street, operators had posted Tuesday: “Not open tonight … May open tomorrow, may not … Maybe Thursday. Will definitely be open Friday for Songwriter Round and Saturday for George Porter Jr. and Runnin’ Pardners. Thank you for your continued support! Stay safe!”
Roosters restaurant posted Wednesday that “Based on road conditions (and the ice cycles hanging on our Habanero plants) we have decided to remain closed today for the safety of our staff. We really hope to be open tomorrow at our normal business hours.”
At Soul Kitchen Music Hall on Dauphin Street, a Highly Suspect show planned for Tuesday evening had to be rescheduled for Feb. 16. The venue said previously purchased tickets would be valid on the new date, but that ticketholders would receive an email with instructions on how to get a refund. Meanwhile, as snow fell on Tuesday, the venue announced an April 25 performance by St. Paul & The Broken Bones, with tickets to go on sale Friday.
Squid Ink Eats & Drinks on Dauphin Street notified patrons that it would be closed Wednesday but open regular hours on Thursday.
