These are the Alabama cities where Publix is planning new stores
Several Alabama cities will join those with a Publix grocery store within the next two years.
The Florida-based chain, which is one of the 10 largest-volume supermarket chains in the country, saw sales of $54.5 billion in 2022. The company currently has 88 stores in Alabama, according to its website.
Publix has opened more than 50 new stores throughout the Southeast since 2022, according to Progressive Grocer. The country’s largest employee-owned company, it employs more than 250,000 employees. New stores range from 45,000 to 49,000 square feet.
Earlier this year, Publix opened a 48,000-square-foot store at Market City Square in Sylacauga.
According to the company website, its next store opening is currently slated for Nov. 1 at 1288 Grants Mill Rd. in Irondale at Cahaba Crossing.
A Publix has been close to completion in Fairhope at Alabama 104 and Alabama 181, but its opening was delayed by water and infrastructure issues, according to FOX10.
Last December, a 48,387-square-foot Publix was announced for the northwest corner of the intersection of U.S. 231 and Ft. Toulouse Road in Wetumpka, according to The Wetumpka Herald. That project could be completed by the early part of 2024.
This April, the City of Semmes announced construction was about to begin in a Publix at Semmes Village along Silver Pine Road. The project is expected to be completed by October 2024.
That same month, demolition began in Gulf Shores at a former Winn-Dixie building on Gulf Shores Parkway near Zaxby’s in Gulf Shores to make way for a new Publix supermarket.
Publix is expected to open in 2025 at 65,000-square-foot Opelika shopping center on the 12.6 acres of land at the intersection of Veterans Parkway and U.S. 280, according to The Opelika Auburn News. The project was announced in May.
In August, a groundbreaking was held at Grandview Plaza in Millbrook for a store expected to open in mid-2024, according to WSFA.
