These are the 10 wealthiest counties in Alabama

Where is the wealth concentrated in Alabama? SmartAsset decided to take a look.

The personal finance site is out with a ranking of Alabama’s 10 wealthiest counties, which stretch across the state in all directions, with numbers higher in some expected population centers.

To rank the counties, SmartAsset compared all across three metrics: investment income, property value, and per capita income.

The investment index for each county was calculated by evenly weighing ordinary dividends, qualified dividends and net capital gains. Then the median home value and the per capita income for each county were added to the mix.

This resulted in a wealth index that helped ranked the counties.

The counties are:

10. Autauga County

9. Jefferson County

8. St. Clair County

7. Tuscaloosa County

6. Elmore County

5. Lee County

4. Limestone County

3. Madison County

2. Baldwin County

1. Shelby County

To see how the rankings work, you can compare them with the state’s median income ($54,943), its investment income ($24,813) and median home value ($161,857).

Looking at median income, Shelby County ranks first with $82,592. As for investment income, the leader is Walker County, which didn’t make the top 10, at $118,724. For median home value, top marks go to Baldwin County, at $358,192.
