These 4 Alabama cities had record low high temperatures on Tuesday

At least four Alabama cities had record cold temperatures on Tuesday — but they were record low highs.

The National Weather Service said Huntsville, Muscle Shoals, Birmingham and Tuscaloosa had record low maximum temperatures on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Huntsville’s high was 21 degrees, breaking the record of 24 in 2009.

The high temperature in Muscle Shoals was 22 degrees on Tuesday, which tied the record last set in 1927.

The weather service in Birmingham said Birmingham’s high on Tuesday was 27 degrees, breaking the previous record in 1977 of 30.

Tuscaloosa’s high was 28 degrees on Tuesday, breaking the previous record of 31 degrees in 1977.

Lows overnight and into Wednesday morning ranged from 1 degree in Haleyville to 19 degrees in Dothan and Mobile.

High temperatures are expected to be “warmer” on Wednesday, but still not near the average for mid-January:

High temperatures today (Wednesday) will be “warmer” than on Tuesday but still very cold across the state. Temperatures will warm up a bit before the next arctic blast arrives starting on Thursday night,National Weather Service

Another arctic blast is expected to arrive on Thursday night, and lows in the teens and single digits will be possible again in Alabama this weekend, the weather service said.
