There’s an important IRS deadline this month: Here’s how to avoid a penalty

The Internal Revenue Service estimates some 19 million taxpayers asked for extensions when filing their returns. If you’re one of the people, there’s an important deadline just weeks away.

People who requested an extension to file their 2022 tax return have until Monday, Oct. 16 to submit their information or face a possible late filing penalty. The extended deadline also covers people in parts of Alabama and Georgia and most of California, due to disaster declarations in those areas.
