The richest person in Alabama is the state’s only billionaire

The Yella Fella still has a lot of green.

Great Southern Wood CEO James “Jimmy” Rane is the richest man in Alabama, according to Forbes Magazine, and the state’s only billionaire.

Rane, 77, of Abbeville, has a net worth of $1.5 billion, the magazine reports.

Rane is also the founder and chairman of his company, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of pressure-treated lumber. Rane started his career as an attorney and mediated a dispute over his father-in-law’s estate, which led to him taking over a small wood treating business.

Now, Great Southern Wood Preserving and its YellaWood brand is a major player in the wood and preservation industry. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Auburn, as well as a J.D. from the Samford University Cumberland School of Law.

Rane was inducted into the Alabama Business Hall of Fame last year.

Alabama is one of 47 states with at least one billionaire. Alaska, Delaware and West Virginia are the only three states still without one.

And a few states have swapped billionaires. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos moved from Washington State to Florida, taking his $194 billion with him. That left Bill Gates as the richest resident in Washington, at $128 billion.

California is home to 197 billionaires, with Mark Zuckerburg taking the top spot, with $177 billion.

New York State has 139 people in the nine-digit neighborhood, while Florida has 107.
