The only Macy’s in Alabama is remaining open – for now

Alabama’s sole remaining Macy’s store is still open, after having avoided the latest round of store closings by the venerable retail chain.

Last week, Macy’s announced another 66 stores would be shuttered as part of its “Bold New Chapter” strategy, which was announced last February.

The Birmingham location, in the Riverchase Galleria, was not among them – despite the fact that the store space has been for sale as a “Big Box opportunity” with SRS Real Estate Partners since last August.

The company’s “Bold New Chapter” plan was formulated to return the company to profitable sales growth by measures that included closing about 150 underproductive stores over a three-year period, while investing in 350 Macy’s locations through fiscal 2026.

In a news release, the company said “Macy’s enters 2025 well-positioned to build momentum with a stronger store fleet and remains focused on bringing this enhanced customer experience to more locations nationwide and through its digital channels.”

Macy’s is among a growing list of companies that have struggled with keeping stores open among increasing retail competition.

After 48 years of business, Macy’s closed its other Birmingham store, at Brookwood Village, in 2022.
