The NFL Draft’s Alabama roots: Pick No. 14
The 2024 NFL Draft starts on April 25 in Detroit with the 32 first-round picks. In the 88 NFL drafts, teams have chosen 128 prospects who played at Alabama high schools and colleges in the first round, and another 29 who were not first-rounders but were selected in the first 32 picks. AL.com is counting down to the draft by highlighting the players with Alabama football roots who have been chosen in the first 32 picks.
Seven prospects from Alabama high schools and colleges have been chosen with the 14th pick in an NFL Draft, even though 37 drafts have passed since that most recently happened.
While three of the picks played at Auburn and two played at Alabama, six were former Alabama high school standouts:
· Guard Tarzan White (Atmore, Alabama): 1937 by the New York Giants. White played on the Giants’ 1938 NFL championship team to highlight his first five seasons before entering the military in World War II. He returned for one more season with the Giants in 1945 before going into professional wrestling.
· Back Lloyd Cheatham (Carbon Hill, Auburn): 1942 by the Chicago Cardinals. A Carbon Hill High School alumnus, Cheatham played one season with the Cardinals before missing the next three years for military service in World War II. He returned in 1946 to play three seasons with the New York Yankees of the All-American Football Conference.
· Defensive end Jerry Wilson (Phillips, Auburn): 1959 by the Chicago Cardinals. Wilson got traded twice in his two NFL seasons. After drafting him, Chicago shipped him to the Philadelphia Eagles before he’d played a game for the Cardinals. Philadelphia traded Wilson to the San Francisco 49ers four games into his second season. After spending 1961 in the military, Wilson closed his career with three seasons for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canada Football League before a knee injury ended his playing days.
· Defensive tackle Ron Billingsley (Gadsden): 1967 by the San Diego Chargers. After starring at Wyoming, the 6-foot-8, 290-pound Billingsley played six seasons in the NFL before his injury problems finally sidelined him for good.
· Defensive end Marty Lyons (Alabama): 1979 by the New York Jets. Lyons was a starter for 11 seasons with the Jets and is a member of the team’s Ring of Honor for his role in the New York Sack Exchange. He recorded 43 sacks in 147 regular-season games and six more in seven postseason contests playing defensive tackle and defensive end.
· Cornerback Derrick Burroughs (Blount): 1985 by the Buffalo Bills. Burroughs was in his fifth season with the Bills when he sustained a neck injury during a 47-41 victory over the Houston Oilers on Sept. 24, 1989. The injury left Burroughs paralyzed into the next day. When he recovered, he was diagnosed with cervical stenosis and advised to retire. Burroughs later served nine seasons as the head coach at Lane College.
· Defensive end Gerald Robinson (Notasulga, Auburn): 1986 by the Minnesota Vikings. Robinson played in 89 regular-season games in nine seasons, but early injuries derailed his promise after he set Auburn’s career sacks record. From 1987 through 1989, Robinson played in six games. His only season as a full-time regular came in 1992, when he started every game for the Los Angeles Rams and recorded five of his career total of 19 sacks.
The New Orleans Saints hold the 14th selection in this year’s draft.
