The Huntsville Times Player of the Week: Sophomore stands out
High school student-athletes in The Huntsville Times metro area stepped up last week playing in games that decided who would advance to this week’s regional tournaments at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville and Jacksonville State University.
Two standout girls’ players head the list with top all-around efforts with three boys filling out the list with tough balanced performances.
Here are the top 5 players with statistics from the area championships for Class 7A teams and the sub-regional games for the rest, based on information provided by coaches or scorekeepers:
5. Simon Walker, Huntsville. Walker, a 6-foot-5 junior guard, scored 14 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and had 5 assists in a 60-44 win over city rival Grissom to advance to the Northeast Regional at Jacksonville State University. The top-ranked Crimson Panthers (30-2) will meet Oak Mountain (14-15) on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
4. London Townsend, James Clemens. The 6-2 junior turned in a critical performance in James Clemens’ 75-70 overtime win over No. 2 Austin. Townsend scored 21 points with 7 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal for Frankie Sullivan’s Jets. James Clemens (17-8) will play No. 8 Thompson (21-9) Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Northwest Regional at Wallace State-Hanceville.
