The grocery item that rose in price the most last month
The overall cost of groceries rose 0.2% in August over July and remained 3% higher than the same point in 2022, according to an analysis by Stacker.
The increase followed a slight dip in March and April, mostly due to the decrease in egg prices, as well as slight drops in meats, fruits and vegetables and dairy products.
Despite the lull, groceries in some categories continue to climb. Stacker tracked this with monthly data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to find the grocery items that experienced the largest price increases over last month in the South. For this analysis, the South includes Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Washington D.C., Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Stacker excluded some hyper-specific meat categories in order to better understand grocery price fluctuations more broadly.
